A Way to Get Your Life Unstuck

(That Actually Works)

Three transformations emerge after reading this book...

1. You Will Learn Who You Are

When childhood is focused on being well-behaved, following instructions, and making others feel comfortable, you may learn how to meet expectations without getting much room to discover what you like, what interests you, or what you want for yourself.

One beta reader recognized this in the book’s discussion of cultivation. She wrote:

“I learned to be a well-mannered lady and followed instructions… Sadly, I feel like there’s something inside that still feels ignored and small. I was never shown to stick to something you like and see it through.”

So You Were Neglected, Now What? will help you explore the interests, preferences, and parts of yourself that may not have had room to develop, so you can build a clearer sense of who you are and what you want.

2. You Will Stop Needing Permission

If you were the good kid, the responsible child, or the child who took their religion seriously, you may have learned that waiting for approval before making an important decision felt safer than trusting your own judgment.

It’s like a teenager choosing a college because their friends are going there. Those friends may have thought carefully about their futures, the majors they wanted to pursue, the degrees they wanted to earn, and the professors they wanted to study under. But a child who has not practiced agency may choose based on acceptance and approval, following their friends instead of deciding what they want for themselves.

Seeking advice, counsel, or wisdom is not a limitation. But feeling unable to make a personal decision until someone else approves can keep you waiting to live your life.

So You Were Neglected, Now What? will help you understand where that hesitation may come from, so you can make your own decisions with greater confidence and move forward without waiting for permission.

3. You Will Become an Action-Taker

An adult who was cared for but not cultivated may struggle to take decisive action. If your upbringing focused on getting things right, looking put together and perfect, or feeling responsible for other people’s actions, you may not have developed the ability to act on plans of your own. So You Were Neglected, Now What? will give you the frameworks to practice strengthening the agency whose development was overlooked in childhood.

Why I'm Giving The Book Away at Cost...

(And no, it's not a gimmick.)

I’m selling each book at the cost of printing, fulfillment, and shipping, and not a penny more.

Why am I doing this? For a couple of reasons.

For one, I know firsthand the quiet pain of feeling like I was made for more but unable to tap into it. Before I figured out what it was, my young adulthood was almost over. I studied everything you can think of, from psychology to personal development to metaphysical sciences like Human Design and the Enneagram. Those systems helped me peel back the layers of the problem a little at a time.

I’m grateful for the time I spent researching and studying. But if I could have had a guide with the clarity and language to help me discover the problem and work toward a solution, I would have paid a nice price for it. (Payment plan me, please.)

But seriously, I realize how significant the mission I’m on is. Like you, I didn’t come from a terrible home, and that is part of why it took me so long to discover the root issue. I had food, shelter, and clothing. When they were able, my parents allowed me to join sports teams, which took time and money. But what I was lacking was formative cultivation, not formative care.

That’s why I’m making this book available to you at cost. You’ve struggled silently long enough, especially when people can’t understand how someone from a good home could still be struggling (this book is for those who didn't, too).

The second reason I’m selling this book at cost is because I hope it helps you enough to make you interested in the other work I share. I believe those ideas and resources can help you keep growing and complete more of the formation childhood interrupted.

So here we are. Here’s someone who gets you, someone who knows this climb because I’ve had to make it myself.

Happy climbing, my formative friend. Godspeed.

Why? Because it takes time, money, and energy to maintain.

(I don't want to run a business and hire people. I'd rather read, think, and take notes all day.)

The inventory is updated hourly. If you order and the guide is already sold out, you will be refunded.

If you're reading this message, then there are still copies left.

About The Author

Meet The Person Making Formative Friends

Hello. First, even though I specialize in group formation, I strongly dislike introductions and icebreakers. I do not want to stand up, say my name, and share an interesting fact about myself. It makes me feel nervous and queasy inside. But I understand the psychology and purpose behind them, so here it goes.

Where should I begin? How about my name? I’m a junior, named after my father, of course. I was the last child in a family made up mostly of girls. He was thrilled when I came along.

I’ve lived an interesting life, but what do you need to know about me as the author? Maybe this: leadership has a way of finding me. I’ve been trusted to lead as captain of the safety patrol in elementary school, as an ordained youth pastor, and as president of my Toastmasters club. I’ve never asked for these roles. I was recommended. I like to think people saw my ability to look beyond the surface and identify the real issue.

I’ve been a certified mindfulness instructor for more than ten years, and I’ve dedicated much of my life to serving young people through my work at a nonprofit. They’ve taught me a lot about the reality of social and emotional life: what translates into practice and what is simply an ornament.

If you want to know what influenced me to write this book, you’ll have to read it. I don’t want to write all that again here. Just kidding.

Seriously, my interest in identity formation grew out of my years studying self-development. I became especially interested in the elements of identity formation: meaning, storytelling, and directed attention. I wanted to understand how these elements could be made practical for a modern audience.

I realized that cultures across time and place have used ritual processes to shape identity, so I began studying ritual through scholars like Arnold Van Gennep and Victor Turner. But the subject still felt abstract, interesting in a college auditorium but distant from everyday life.

Then I began asking a question that connected what I was studying with something I had experienced myself: What actually causes durable identity change under real pressure?

Many people want to upgrade their self-image, transform their identity, and become their best selves. I wanted to understand what makes that change real.

I had struggled with restricted agency for years and had already pulled myself out of it, making plenty of mistakes along the way. I didn’t realize that the framework taking shape through my study of identity formation was a distillation of what I had learned and practiced in my own life.

By happenstance, I found a community asking a question that gave the framework a concrete application: If I grew up with restricted agency and am still living with its effects, how do I fix it? That’s why I wrote this book.
